Message from the Board of Directors

Spring is upon us, which represents new beginnings.  Mother nature comes back to life after being dormant for the winter months, birds return, flowers emerge, and reporting season is on the horizon…

With spring, AHMP is beginning to emerge from our winter cocoon and we are getting energized for the months ahead.  We are focused on recognizing accomplishments through Award Nominations and providing educational opportunities for our Membership through Webinars, Peer Consult, and Environment, Health & Safety – Hazardous Materials Management Summit (formerly AHMP Conference) in Kansas City, MO this summer.  The Call for Abstracts is open and planning efforts are well underway.  There are exciting opportunities for contact-hours, networking, tours, recognition, and fun!

In addition to rebirth and renewal, March also represents Women’s History Month.  Women’s History Month has roots in 1981 when Congress passed a proclamation for the week of March 7, 1982 to be declared “Women’s History Week.”  This continued for five years, until 1987, in which Congress designated the month of March “Women’s History Month,” in response to a petition from the National Women’s History Project.  Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month.  Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields. There are numerous female figures in history across the US and World.  There are also many amazing female leaders within our own AHMP Membership, Chapter Leadership. Volunteers, Supporters, Committees, and Board of Directors.  We are grateful for your contributions in making this world a better place for us all to live in.

Chair, AHMP Board of Directors

Committee Report

The AHMP BoD recently held a Special Meeting to discuss path forward of the Susan Harwood Target Topic Training grant from OSHA. The decision from this meeting was to withdraw from the grant.  This decision did not come lightly for the AHMP BoD.

Since the award notification AHMP has encountered several challenges which have prevented us from being able to put our best foot forward with the execution of this grant. Although AHMP is withdrawing from this opportunity, the action should not be viewed as a failure. The technical expertise presented in the application materials and the fact AHMP was named as a recipient speaks volumes to you as professionals and AHMP as an organization.

In followup to the AHMP BoD resolution, a task force has been established to develop a Charter & Governance documents to be able to formally operate an AHMP Grant Committee. With a fully Chartered Grant Committee, AHMP will be better positioned not only to apply for future grants, but execute them in a successful manner.

If you have experience with writing or executing grants, we encourage you to participate in this effort.  No experience, no problem!  We are all in this and learning together.  Please send inquires on how to participate to [email protected]
