Monday Keynote: Did you know that electronic waste is the fastest growing solid waste in the world? Have you ever worried about who is recycling your electronics and what happens to it once it’s dropped off? Did your data get scrubbed off the devices? Is e-waste recycling part of your Sustainability program? John Shegerian, CEO of ERI, discussed all these topics and more.

Tuesday Keynote: Jeffery Robichaud of Region 7 US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Division of Water spoke on the new PFAS regulations at this year’s EHS Hazmat Summit. We learned about the latest developments on recent rule making and how they will be applied and enforced.

Panel Discussion: On Tuesday, Sean Grady led a panel discussion on the challenges with emergency response readiness for hazmat railroad incidents and other training considerations. We were fortunate to have some of the best railroad and response leaders in the industry participate. Panelists included Howard Skip Elliott, HRE Integrity LLC & John Walsh, Short Line Safety Institute & Chief Dennis Rubin, Kansas City Fire Dept. & Chris Kuhlman, CTEH & Lane Sekavec, Union Pacific Railroad.

Railway Emergency Response Scenario: Tuesday afternoon attendees had the option to observe the annual Emergency Response Scenario. This year the ERS was a railway scenario held at BNSF Railway. Many thanks to BNSF, UP, Environmental Works, and multiple fire departments from the greater Kansas City area!

Government Affairs

Education and Workforce Freedom Act approved by House Committee.  Next stop is a vote on the house floor.

This bill impacts AHMP membership. Categorical expenses like AHMP conference registration or EHMM night school are reasonable in obtaining and or maintaining credentials. Update below.

U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means approved H.R. 8915, the Education and Workforce Freedom Act, by a vote of 23-13. The bill will now head to the House floor.

The bill would allow families, students and workers to choose an education most suited to their needs by allowing tax-exempt distributions from 529 plans to be used for additional educational expenses in connection with attendance at K-12 school (including homeschool).

It would also allow for 529s to be used to pay for expenses associated with obtaining or maintaining recognized postsecondary credentials and licenses.
