Welcome and congratulations to the newest Directors who will begin their term January 2025! Voting for this election closed on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
IHMM Partnership
The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) and the Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals (AHMP) have forged an exciting new partnership, marking a significant milestone in the field of hazardous materials management. This collaboration, which commenced on November 1, 2024, and will run through December 31, 2025, aims to enhance educational opportunities and promote professional credentials in the industry.
Key Aspects of the Partnership
- Mutual Promotion and Information Sharing: AHMP will play a crucial role in promoting IHMM's credentials and educational programs. They will post relevant education and training programs on IHMM's Foundation website, ensuring that IHMM certificants have access to valuable learning opportunities aligned with IHMM blueprints. Additionally, AHMP will share announcements of special interest events with IHMM for publication in the IHMM Today electronic newsletter, fostering a broader reach for both organizations.
- Enhanced Visibility for IHMM Credentials: As part of this agreement, AHMP will actively promote IHMM credentials through their communication channels. This includes featuring credential promotion inserts in AHMP's newsletter, showcasing the various professional certifications offered by IHMM, such as the Associate Hazardous Materials Manager (AHMM).
- Collaborative Content Sharing: IHMM will reciprocate by providing space in its IHMM Today newsletter for AHMP to promote its initiatives and events. This mutual content sharing will ensure that professionals in the field stay informed about the latest developments, training opportunities, and industry news from both organizations.
Benefits for Professionals
This partnership brings numerous advantages to professionals in the hazardous materials management field:
- Expanded access to educational resources and training programs
- Increased awareness of professional credentials and certification opportunities
- Enhanced networking possibilities through shared events and announcements
- A more unified approach to addressing industry challenges and advancements
Looking Ahead
While the current agreement is set to conclude on December 31, 2025, both organizations have the option to extend their collaboration beyond this date, signaling a commitment to long-term cooperation in the field of hazardous materials management.
This strategic partnership between IHMM and AHMP represents a significant step forward in strengthening the hazardous materials management profession. By combining their resources and expertise, these organizations are poised to elevate industry standards, enhance professional development opportunities, and ultimately contribute to safer and more effective hazardous materials management practices.

From the Professional Development Committee
One of the greatest resources we have as an association is our Desk Reference. Revision 4 was a total overhaul of the Desk Reference and was published in 2020. It was a collaborative effort (truly a work of love) by many of your fellow CHMMs. We are nearing the five-year mark and would like to review the content to see where it needs to be updated. While the PDC is has some resources to review, edit and amend the desk reference, it is always helpful to have extra eyes on the content. There are a number of instances where PFAS regulations already have or will soon be inserting themselves into various topics and there are a number of other emerging issues that may be in the same category.
For this reason, we are soliciting your assistance. We have identified our top 10 chapters (out of the 47 in the desk reference) to target for this first review. In order to participate, you must contact the committee and indicate your willingness to read and comment on a chapter (or chapters). Where there is content needing a refresh, or perhaps clarification, we ask for that feedback as well. We will provide a work sheet for you to complete with your notes and recommendations.
This activity counts towards your CEUs for certification (self-tracking of hours). We are happy to provide a certificate you can complete to track your time. Our plan is to solicit membership feedback and then assign 2 subject matter experts to each chapter to consider all the comments and research any changes needed. We are hoping to start the SME review early in 2025. So if you have an hour or two of downtime over the holiday season (it’s a slow regulatory time you know), this is a great opportunity to get CEUs and serve yourself and your fellow members. If interested, please reach out to Jennifer Koenig at [email protected] or call (812) 945-1541.
The first 10 chapters for review include:
- Chapter 8 Flammable Materials
- Chapter 13 Air Quality and Air Pollutant Management
- Chapter 14 Water Programs - Assigned
- Chapter 15 Waste Management - Assigned
- Chapter 17 Toxic Substances Control Act- Assigned
- Chapter 19 Hazardous Materials Transportation - Assigned
- Chapter 22 Environmental Sampling
- Chapter 23 Remediation Technologies
- Chapter 24 Brownfields
- Chapter 25 Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act
Additional chapters will be reviewed in the future. If there is a specific chapter you are interested in volunteering for, let us know.
